A total of 21 Muslim Marriage Officers from Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River have been appointed and licensed to officiate and register Muslim marriages in the Coastal region. The appointments were made by the Registrar of Marriages after the officers were successfully recommended by the Muslim Marriage Committee. The 21 individuals are part of 62 Muslim Marriage Officers appointed nationwide in January 2025, bringing the total number of licensed officers to 237 across the country. Speaking on Wednesday during the license presentation ceremony in Mombasa, Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Athman Hussein urged the newly appointed officers to serve the Muslim community with dedication, integrity, and honesty. He emphasized the importance of upholding Islamic principles while officiating marriages and handling marital disputes. “The newly appointed officers must lead by example and serve with utmost dedication. Their role is critical in maintaining the integrity of Muslim marriages and restoring confidence in the institution,” said Sheikh Abdulhalim. He further encouraged the officers to take an active role in salvaging marriages and resolving disputes among couples to strengthen family ties within the Muslim community. Sheikh Abdulhalim also announced that the officers would undergo orientation and training to enhance their service delivery before officially assuming their duties. “The newly appointed Marriage Officers will undergo specialized training to ensure they are well-equipped to perform their duties effectively. These training sessions will also be extended to other regions in the country,” he added. Meanwhile, the Muslim Marriage Committee’s national coordinator, Sheikh Yusuf Nassur Abuhamza, confirmed that additional Muslim Marriage Officers who have applied for the position will be officially licensed in April and August 2025. Among those licensed are notable Islamic figures, including former Principal Kadhis Sheikh Mshali Hamisi Mshali, Sheikh Twalib Bwana Muhammad, and Sheikh Hassan Muhammad. Renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Islam Muhammad Salim, Sheikh Yusuf Abdi, and SUPKEM Deputy National Chairman Sheikh Muhdhar Khitamy were also among those granted licenses.
