The centre aims to bridge the digital divide by offering training in areas such as web design, basic computer literacy, and other skill-based education programs. The initiative targets both individuals who can afford subsidized fees and those who will benefit from full sponsorships, ensuring inclusivity and equal access to opportunities.
Speaking at the launch, Garissa Township Member of Parliament Major (Rtd) Dekow Barrow lauded the project as a critical intervention for the Muslims and the local community. He emphasized the urgent need to engage young people in meaningful activities, noting the rising concern over drug abuse and idleness among Muslim youth.
“Our youth need direction, skills, and a purpose. This ICT centre is not just a school; it’s a lifeline. We must create more such spaces to keep our youth away from destructive paths. Where I come from, so many of our young people are in drugs especially Miraa and Muguku, It has destroyed our young people,” said Major Dekow.
Shenaz Abdulwahid ,the country director Mountain of Mercy reiterated their commitment to long-term community development through education and empowerment. Shenaz said the partnership between Mountain of Mercy and Darul Khair Organization highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader mission to uplift underserved communities through ICT.
" In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, the ability to understand and utilise Information and Communication Technology is no longer a luxury it is a necessity,” Shenaz said. “By starting these ICT classes, we are opening doors of opportunity for many, enabling them to acquire essential digital skills that will empower them in education, work, and everyday life.”
Ustadha Aisha Mohammed, Director, Darul Khair Organization called on the participants to embrace the opportunity and use the knowledge to give back to society and to help others move forward in this digital era.
" Let us work together to ensure that this initiative grows and brings long-lasting positive impact to all,” she said.
