The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has today released an audit and research report highlighting the extent of corruption and bribery within the National Police Service (NPS).
The report, unveiled at the Embakasi Police Training College in Nairobi, reveals that the average amount of bribes taken by regular police officers and traffic officers increased by 39.1% and 84.2%, respectively, between 2022 and 2023.
The audit found that a Kenyan seeking a police abstract form in 2023 paid an average bribe of Ksh 20,000, a significant rise from Ksh 2,000 in 2022, despite the document being a basic requirement for police services.
Additionally, Kenyans seeking police protection in 2023 paid an average bribe of Ksh 6,887, compared to Ksh 816 in 2018.
The report also indicates that the number of people who admitted to bribing regular and traffic police officers has risen over the past two years. According to the findings, 75 out of 100 people confessed to bribing traffic police officers in 2024, compared to 69 out of 100 in both 2023 and 2022
